About the event
Chilean wine has developed greatly over the past 20 years. A Merlot from Chile would have seemed exotic at the turn of the century, but is now a standard fixture in every supermarket throughout the UK.
Chile made it's name with fruity, well made, value for rmoney wines. It started with black fruited Merlots, Cabernets and Carmeneres and has broadened into crisp and fruity Sauvignons and Viogniers.
We're going to look at an 'Alternative Chile'. Starting with a Champagne style Fizz - the first organic sparkling wine in Chile. Then we'll taste a Sauvignon Blanc, nothing odd there except this is an 'orange wine' the wine spending 5 months in contact with its skins, to give it more colour, more body and more funkiness! We'll finish by tasting a red grape that could have a big future in Chile - Carignan. Over the past few years we have tasted Carignans from its homeland in the South of France and also from Spain and Sardinia. It thrives in inhospitable climates and terrains that other grapes don't. Perfect for newer Chilean regions previously deemed unsuitable for wine production.
